Enterprise Risk Management System

In 2022 Hunter Water started a project do consolidate many discrete and bespoke risk management systems that were in use throughout the enterprise.  These were typically spreadsheets, each designed and maintained by the risk manager for a department, and used solely by that department.  This varied source of enterprise risk tracking made consolidated reporting on risk to the board very difficult and time consuming.

"Protecht" was selected after a standard tender process (as per government procurement guidelines) and work began to centralise all of the key points from each register into a single, enterprise risk management platform.

Additional components for Audit Planning, Incident Management and Hazard reporting were incorporated into the first phase of the build.  LexisNexis, a subscription feed which updates clients to changes in regulations and reporting requirements, was also incorporated into a new Statutory Communications module.

A separate workshop was conducted by Protecht to redevelop the enterprise risk taxonomy and introduce a common language for risk across the business.  The new taxonomy was approved by the Hunter Water board and incorporated into the product.

The development process consisted of a paper-based review of the current modules with the business stakeholders.  Changes and functional requirements were passed back to Protecht to build into a working system.

After the paper-based design several rounds of UAT were conducted with key business representatives for fine-tuning and confirmation that the product was going to deliver the functionality that was required.  One advantage of using key staff members for UAT was by default they became champions for the product when it was released to production.

When Hunter Water went live with Protecht in mid-2023 it was extremely well received by the entire business with many risk managers and other key users in the WHS departments saying it was a fundamental improvement for how they did their work.

Protecht is the new ERM system deployed Hunter Water.
